A village belongs to the municipality of Himarë, lying 42 kilometers south of the city of Vlorë and about the same distance north of Saranda, Albania’s southernmost city.

Built on a slope of the Ceraunian Mountains, the original village stands at an altitude of approximately 200 meters.

Just outside of Himara is an old triangular fortress that dates back to the days of Ali Pasha. It was built in the early 19th Century as a prison. But now considered as a touristic attraction.

Once you are done touring the castle, you can hop in the water just outside. The Porto Palermo Fortress is on an island that has a patch of sand connecting it to the mainland. This now doubles as a beach, and has a beautiful view of either side of “Panorama Bay.”

Nestled between the spectacular Ionian to the west and a chain of mountains on the eastern side, the old town of Himara resembles an amphitheatre. Himara, one of the top summer destinations in the country, is also home to a significant part of Albanian cultural heritage. The medieval fortress contains ruins that show a continuous presence of Illyrian-Albanian residents for more than 3500 years.

Surrounded by canyons, the old town of Himara is built on a hill located about 1 km away from the Ionian shore. Himara’s historical center, otherwise known as the Himara Castle, stands on the cliff of Barbaka and is considered to be one of the most beautiful castles of the south.
