The National University Library of Kosovo

The most impressive and important cultural institutions in the country, located in the capital city of Pristina. 

The library was established in 1944, and today it serves as the main academic library for the University of Pristina, as well as a research center for scholars and academics from around the world.

The library’s collection includes over two million books, journals, and other materials, making it one of the largest libraries in the Balkans. The collection is particularly strong in the areas of Albanian studies, Kosovo history, and Islamic studies.

In addition to its impressive collection, the National University Library of Kosovo is also known for its stunning architecture. The building was designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković and features a striking modernist design that stands out in the heart of the city. The library’s façade is made up of hexagonal shapes, and the interior is filled with natural light and spacious reading rooms.

NEWBORN

Brightly-colored art installation located in the capital city of Pristina, Kosovo. 

It was unveiled on February 17, 2008, the same day that Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia. The installation consists of large letters spelling out the word “NEWBORN” in English, with each letter designed by a different artist.

NEWBORN quickly became a symbol of the country’s newfound independence, and has since become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Pristina. Each year on February 17th, the installation is repainted with a new design, symbolizing a fresh start and a new beginning.

Skanderbeg Square

The main square in the heart of Pristina, the capital city of Kosovo. It is named after the national hero of Albania, George Kastrioti Skanderbeg, who fought against the Ottoman Empire during the 15th century. The square is a popular tourist destination and a center of cultural and social activities in the city.

The square is dominated by the statue of Skanderbeg riding on his horse, which stands at the center of the square. Surrounding the statue are several important buildings and landmarks, including the National Museum of Kosovo, the Ethnographic Museum, the Clock Tower, and the Government Building.

Skanderbeg Square is a must-visit attraction for anyone traveling to Pristina. Its rich history, impressive architecture, and vibrant atmosphere make it one of the most iconic and beloved landmarks in the city.

Grunasi waterfall

One of the most astonishing natural attractions in the Theth National Park and in the Albanian Alps.

Grunasi waterfall is located on the western slope of the Theth valley in the Albanian Alps. The water falls from a height of 25 m. At the bottom of the waterfall natural bath with emerald water is created, from which water flows into the valley of Theth, join the Shala River, at the beginning of the Grunasi canyon.

The Blue Eye

The most frequented natural attraction in Theth. This amazing attraction is placed in the village of Kaprre, 7 km away from Theth village, which is part of Thethi National Park.

It is a well with a surface of about 100 m2 and about 4-5 m deep, which is formed by the Black River flow that descends from the upper Kaprrea. Located between rocky and green slopes, with its depth this well takes on the colors of blue and emerald depending on the season, forming a fascinating landscape.

Theth National Park

 Located in the northern part of Albania near the border with Montenegro. The park covers an area of 10.15 square miles creating another small park within the country packed with natural wonders. The Albanian Alps and the Shala Valley are at the heart of the national park. The park is characterized by thick forests, meandering rivers, beautiful waterfalls, and striking rock formations. The diverse ecosystems serve as home to a variety of wildlife species such as: The brown bear, chamois, roe deer, lynx, wild goat, and the gray wolf. The golden eagle is one of the most exciting sightings from the 50 species of birds nesting or migrating through the park.

Lëpushe and Vermosh

Mountain villages in northern Shkodër. Lëpushe resembles a Swiss village, is named after a yellow-flowered plant that grows in the area. Vermosh is known for the 100 days of snow every year.

Both of them are surrounded by high mountains which make them ideal places for skiing and other winter sports.

Razëm

One of the most beautiful villages, located in the heart of the Albanian Alps, an hour from Shkodër. Razëm used to be a summer headquarters for Shkodër traders until the 1990s and then turned into a winter tourist resort. The famous area for skiing during winter is called The Black Fields. You can also enjoy camping, horse riding, walking in nature, hunting animals and birds in summer.

Shkodër History Museum

This museum is situated in a brilliant position, on a steep hill overlooking the town. The building was originally the home of a former Venetian merchant, and later became the residence of Oso Kuka, then turned to be a historic museum since 1947. The building is surrounded by fortified walls, which makes it a typical Venetian merchant’s home.

The Historical Museum has culturally and historically significant artifacts. The exhibits include a typically ornate guest rooms, and a basement with a small archeology exhibition featuring an early Christian Plate of David, and artifacts from the Byzantine era, Ottoman times, and right up to Enver Hoxha’s oppressive regime. In the garden you’ll also find a Roman tomb and a Venetian stone well

Venice Art Mask Factory

 Exhibition presents the largest and only collection of luxury Venetian Baroque masks handcrafted from paper mâché and ceramic. The masks are decorated with materials, such as authentic plume feathers, gold and silver leaf, carnival Swarovski crystals and pearls.

It is a combined workshop and a museum is managed by Edmond Angoni, an Albanian craftsman who immigrated to Italy in the 90s to master the Venetian mask art. He has made a successful career designing masks for numerous films and productions, the most famous is Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut in 1999. Because of the fact that each mask is treated as a unique piece of art, the sheer originality and quality of these works has contributed to increase the popularity of this factory worldwide.
