Tirana Castle

The fortress is the place where the main east–west and north–south roads crossed, and formed the heart of Tirana. About all that is left of the fortress above ground is a 6-metre high Ottoman-era wall, covered in vines.

The recently uncovered wall foundations were incorporated into the pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street. The Castle of Tirana was declared a monument of culture of first category on 1973.

The Mother Albania

 A 12-metre statue located at the National Martyrs Cemetery in the southeast of the city. The statue figuratively represents Albania, as a mother guarding over the eternal slumber of those who gave their lives for her. On the front of the pedestal is the inscription Lavdi e Përjetshme Dëshmorëve të Atdheut (English: Perpetual fame for the martyrs of the fatherland.

Old Bazaar

A neighborhood of the old town of Tirana. The name comes from the groceries marketplace, which is situated in the area, which offers a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables grown locally in the surrounding areas of Tirana, fish and meat. Now it is well-known for its colorful buildings.

 

The Boulevard

Was planned by -the same architect who designed Mother Tessa Square- the Italian Gherardo Bosio, during the Italian occupation of Albania also in a Rationalist style. The boulevard, includes several administrative buildings and financial buildings. The street was created as part of renovation of the Albanian capital in the 1930s and 1940s.

Blloku

The Blloku is widely known as an entertainment and shopping destination with its many boutiques, shops, restaurants, trendy bars, pubs and cafes. During the Communist period it was a restricted residential area for the members of the Albanian politburo; ordinary Albanians would not be allowed in. The residence of the Albania’s communist leader Enver Hoxha is still there.

Mother Teresa Square

The largest square in Tirana. It was named after the Albanian Roman Catholic nun and missionary Mother Teresa. The square was planned by the Italian Gherardo Bosio, during the Italian occupation of Albania in a Rationalist style. The square lies on the north-end of the Boulevard.

Many significant buildings are located on the street including the University of Tirana, the University of Arts, the National Archeological Museum and the Centre of Albano logical Studies.

Bunk ‘art Museum

In 1983, approximately 173,371 concrete bunkers were scattered throughout the country under the Communism. The Bunk’art Museum is situated inside an atomic bunker of the dictator Enver Hoxha. It is dedicated to the Communism in Albania and to the daily lives of Albanians during the regime. It also hosts exhibitions that combine the modern history of the nation with contemporary art. It is located at Skanderbeg square.

National Art Gallery & Reja the Cloud

 The gallery was opened on 1954, preserving over 5000 artworks. Besides the permanent collection which focuses on Socialist Realism art.

The Cloud is an art installation placed in front of National Gallery of Arts. Since 2016, the Cloud has served as modern art space for cultural events in Tirana.

The Pavilion is a fine, three-dimensional structure. The structure is 350 square-meters and the Pavilion has two entrances. A series of stepped terraces provide seating areas that allow the Pavilion to be used as a multi-purpose social space. The quality of the structure, enhanced by its semi-transparency, creates a geometric, cloud-like form, as if it were mist rising from the waviness of the park.

 

House of Leaves

It is a historical museum in Tirana, also known as the Museum of Secret Surveillance. It was opened on 2017 in the building that served as Sigurimi’s headquarters during the communist era.

The museum is housed in a two-storey villa with a courtyard of 31 rooms. It was named so because of the climbing plant that covers its facade.

The museum is “dedicated to the innocent people who were spied on, arrested, prosecuted, convicted and executed during the communist regime”

The museum has ‘The Best European Museum’ award of the Year 2020 by the Council of Europe.
